Family road trip field guide

Wild coast,
easy wheels.

A decision-ready plan for two adults and kids 5 & 9—built around private bathrooms, protected rides, short hikes, pools, caves, tide pools and less-touristy nature.

Current recommendation: the all-Island route. It keeps the nature payoff high and avoids Vancouver’s peak-season lodging penalty.

Decision flag

The Cowichan float operator says participants must be able to swim. Because the children cannot, confirm eligibility before booking and keep a close-to-shore lake paddle or pool day as the fallback.

What the research says

Recommended

Book the Island circuit

It still delivers the strongest contrast with Lopez Island—caves, temperate rainforest, rugged tide pools, waterfalls and northern wildlife—but now steps south through Parksville or Nanaimo before the ferry home. No planned transfer exceeds roughly six hours.

  • Keep three nights in Campbell River, then use Parksville or Nanaimo for one ferry-eve night.
  • Use Duke Point–Tsawwassen for the final crossing; it avoids downtown Vancouver and points directly toward Seattle.
  • Secure Ucluelet first, then reserve the August 30 ferry and final one-night base.
